There are plenty of sites dedicated to listing the top touristy things to do in Sarajevo, so we haven’t recapped those here. Instead, we have detailed a guide of general things to do while living life in Sarajevo.
Social Life
Expat Social Groups
Sarajevo offers a variety of social groups where expats and locals can connect and mingle. A great place to start is sarajevoexpats.com, which not only lists local events but also provides access to WhatsApp groups for different interests, like board games, ultimate frisbee, hiking, running, table tennis, and more. Also there are several Facebook groups, such as Expats in Sarajevo, where you can ask questions and get helpful answers from the community.
If you’re in Sarajevo as a diplomatic spouse or partner, make sure to check out Enjoy Sarajevo. This friendly group hosts coffee mornings, day trips, and social gatherings aimed at bringing together members of the diplomatic community. It’s a wonderful way to meet others, discover the city, and feel more connected. You can ask your diplomatic mission for more information.
Outdoor Fun & Attractions
Sarajevo Cable Car / Sarajevska žičara
While often featured as a top tourist attraction, the Sarajevo Cable Car / Sarajevska žičara or locally known as the “funicular” is just as much a gem for residents. Originally built in 1958 and fully restored in 2018 after its destruction during the war, the cable car offers a quick and scenic ride from the city center to the top of Trebević Mountain. Operating from 12:00 to 21:00 on Mondays and 09:00 to 21:00 on other days, it’s a perfect way to spend a sunny day. The panoramic views over Sarajevo and the surrounding mountains are breathtaking, and at the summit, you’ll find a cozy café for coffee and relaxation. If you’re up for it, you can hike back down, perhaps along the hauntingly beautiful abandoned bobsled track.
Dogs and bicycles are welcome aboard, YAY!!
Parks in Sarajevo
Sarajevo has several family-friendly parks, perfect for outdoor play and relaxation:
- Park Jezero (listed as Park Betanija on Google Maps, next to Asim Ferhatović Stadium) – Features multiple playgrounds for all ages, workout stations, a skate area, walking trails, and great city views.
- Park Safet Zajko – A spacious, well-maintained park with several playgrounds, a running track, walking paths, large chess board, small football field, and a café. Entry is free, parking is 1 KM per hour. There’s also a high ropes course (though it’s not always open) and clean toilet facilities.
- Park Prijateljstva – Easily walkable from the Old Town, this scenic park offers a playground with great views, rock climbing, and peaceful walking trails—a lovely escape without leaving the city.
Zoos in Sarajevo
“While zoos may offer a chance to see wild animals up close, they often do so at the cost of the animals’ well-being. Confining creatures meant to roam vast territories to small enclosures can cause stress, abnormal behaviors, and a disconnect from their natural instincts. True conservation goes beyond display & it respects the dignity and freedom of wildlife.”

If you’re looking for a family-friendly day trip, Malak Farma is a great option; just about an hour from Sarajevo.
