Sarajevo offers a fantastic range of extracurricular activities for children of all ages and interests. Whether your child wants to explore music, sports, or the arts, there’s something to spark every curiosity. For young musicians, there are several schools offering lessons in piano, guitar, and more. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy everything from tennis and swimming to ice hockey. Families will also find plenty of playcentres, parks, and playgrounds both in the city and nearby. Weekends tend to get busy—especially from 11 AM onward; so arriving early means more space for kids to run, play, and enjoy freely.

Music classes

Sarajevo offers a variety of music schools where children (and adults!) can explore their musical talents through private lessons. Most schools open enrollment in late August or early September, with students committing to a set day and time for the school year. Fees are typically paid monthly. Here are some schools to explore:

Indoor Playcentres

  • Penny Toys ‘n’ Fun – located in Velešići and Westgate, offers a vibrant play space for children aged baby to 14 years old. The Velešići location features a supervised play center where a staff member is present, ensuring a safe and fun environment. Children above a certain age can be left at the center while parents shop nearby. The entry fee is 2 KM per hour, making it a convenient and affordable option for families.
  • Svemirko – located inside Bingo City Center Sarajevo, is a colorful play center for children from babies up to 14 years old. A staff member is always present, and it’s likely that older children can be left to play while parents shop. The cost is 2.50 KM per half hour, and there’s a small seating area with vending machines right next to the play space; so parents can relax and keep an eye on their kids at the same time.
  • Playland – located at SCC, is a fun indoor play center designed for children from babies up to 12 years old. The entry fee is 7 KM per half hour or 13 KM for a full hour, making it a convenient option for families looking to keep their little ones entertained while shopping or enjoying the city center.
  • Caffe & Dječija Igraonica / Rođendaonica “Geppetto”, located on Level 5 of ARIA Mall, is a cozy indoor play center perfect for younger children. Entry is 5 KM per hour, and there’s a nice café on-site where parents can relax with food and drinks while keeping an eye on their little ones at play.
  • Kinderland – located inside Hotel Hills, this large play centre costs 6km on weekdays and 7km on weekends for unlimited play and has something for everyone, from a sectioned off baby area to thrilling climbing equipment for the bigger kids. Kinderland also features a decent sized cafe offerring food and drinks.

Parks

Sarajevo has several family-friendly parks, perfect for outdoor play and relaxation:

  • Park Jezero (listed as Park Betanija on Google Maps, next to Asim Ferhatović Stadium) – Features multiple playgrounds for all ages, workout stations, a skate area, walking trails, and great city views.
  • Park Safet Zajko – A spacious, well-maintained park with several playgrounds, a running track, walking paths, large chess board, small football field, and a café. Entry is free, parking is 1 KM per hour. There’s also a high ropes course (though it’s not always open) and clean toilet facilities.
  • Park Prijateljstva – Easily walkable from the Old Town, this scenic park offers a playground with great views, rock climbing, and peaceful walking trails—a lovely escape without leaving the city.

Farms

If you’re looking for a family-friendly day trip, Malak Farma is a great option; just about an hour from Sarajevo.

With an entry fee of 7 KM, the farm offers walking trails, a chance to see and interact with well-cared-for animals, and plenty of activities for children, including play areas, horseback riding, and an adrenaline park. You can also enjoy a meal at their on-site restaurant and purchase fresh produce directly from the farm. It’s a lovely way to spend a relaxing day in nature.

Venues with Outdoor Playgrounds Around Sarajevo

When the weather is nice, Sarajevo has several great spots where parents can relax while kids play outdoors. It’s a good idea to make reservations at restaurants during lunch or dinner hours, especially on weekends.

  • Hotel Villa Andrea (Trebević) – Just a short drive from the city, this peaceful hotel offers a spacious playground next to its outdoor terrace, surrounded by nature and with easy on-site parking.
  • Hotel Monti (Igman) – About 40 minutes from Sarajevo, Monti has a large playground in front of the hotel (access: 5 KM/day, paid at reception). It’s beautiful for walks, though weekends can be crowded. The hotel also offers day passes for its indoor pool and spa.
  • Hotel Pino Nature (Trebević) – A favorite among locals and tourists, with free playground access, an outdoor terrace, and hiking routes nearby. Easily reachable by car or a walk from the Sarajevo cable car. The restaurant serves local and international dishes, and staff speak English.
  • Sunnyland (Trebević) – Just minutes from the city center, this popular spot features a thrilling alpine coaster, indoor and outdoor playgrounds, and a café/restaurant with scenic views. Be sure to arrive early on weekends—parking fills up quickly!
  • Carlsberg Beer Garden – If you’re strolling along Vilsonovo šetalište, why not make a pitstop at the Carlsberg Beer Garden. There is an indoor and outdoor playground for kids and, during the summer, the beer garden plays host to a giant bouncy castle slide and bungey trampolines.

Summer Activities for Kids

  • Jahorina Resort – In summer, Jahorina offers a variety of activities for kids, including an alpine coaster running from the mountain top to the main parking area. There’s also an adventure (rope) park near the Gondola, child-friendly restaurants with play areas, and the Jahorina Animal Kingdom trail featuring info boards about local wildlife.
  • Ravna Planina – Ravna Planina is home to Dino Park, a favorite for young kids, reachable by gondola or on foot. There’s also a small lake for swimming and sunbathing, a zip line, a café, and scenic nature. It gets busy in summer, so early arrival is recommended.
  • Bjelašnica – Located about 40 minutes from Sarajevo, Bjelašnica is a major mountain resort offering various summer activities. The newly built Hotel Nomad features a kids’ club and pool.
  • Sarajevo Thermal Riviera – A popular summer destination for families, this water park includes slides and multiple swimming pools; perfect for a fun day out.

Camps for Children

Sarajevo offers great options for both summer and winter camps. Registration usually opens 1–2 months in advance, but early booking requests are generally welcomed.

Library

Just a short walk from ARIA Mall, the American Corner Library is a wonderful place to spend a few hours with your kids. It features a good selection of English books for both children and adults, along with documentaries and films for all age groups.

If you’re looking to help your children learn Bosnian, or hoping to improve your own skills, you’ll find the Children’s Library of Sarajevo in the same building. This library offers a wide range of materials in Bosnian and English. Beyond this location, there are also several other public library branches scattered across the city.

Membership at the American Corner is free, while other public libraries, including the Children’s Library, require a small membership fee.

Movie theaters

One popular cultural venue is Kino Meeting Point, known for its film festivals, performances, and workshops. Movies are screened in their original language, with English subtitles when needed. It’s a favorite gathering place for the artistic community. Tickets cost 8 KM for regular admission and 5 KM for students. For more info: sarajevocityoffilm.ba.

Cineplexx Sarajevo, located near Hotel Holiday and Crvena Jabuka, is a modern multiplex featuring 8 halls equipped with Dolby Atmos sound and RealD Ultimate Screen. They offer weekly deals like 2D films on Wednesdays for 6.50 KM (under 120 minutes), and daily student pricing at 10 KM. Family discounts are available on weekends for children’s films, and birthday packages are also offered.

CineStar Sarajevo is based in Bingo City Center (Otoka) and features 10 advanced halls, including 4DX, RealD 3D, and Dolby 7.1 Surround sound. Visitors can enjoy free indoor parking for 3 hours and unlimited outdoor parking. Tickets are 12 KM, with special deals for kids, families, and birthday parties. Bookings and promotions are easily accessible through their mobile app.

Hint: Check showtime listings on cinema websites or apps (e.g., CineStar, Cineplexx, Meeting Point). They usually specify:

  • Sinkronizirao or Sink = dubbed
  • Subtitled = Titl, subtitled
  • Originalna verzija or OV = original audio (likely English) with subtitles
